Question: Wasn't that four hits? Why didn't the referee blow the whistle?
You're correct. The ball can not normally be contacted four times on a side. The exception occurs when the first, and sometimes multiple, contacts were made in a legal attempt to block the ball. The definition of a block is having a player or players, close to the net and reaching above the net, deflect the ball coming from an opponent. Back row players can not block.
