Learn the Game of Volleyball

This page will be dedicated to learning more about the game and rules of volleyball. One of the Booster Club's roles is to help make each parent a supporting member of the Guilderland teams. A good way to start is to better understand the game.

From Where We Sit...

Question: Who is that varsity player with a different color uniform and why is her's different?

Lauren is playing a position called libero, the Italian word for free. It is also referred to as DS, D-spec, and Defensive Specialist. "Free" is in reference to when she can substitute and with whom she can substitute. It also refers to the fact that libero substitutions do not count toward the team maximum. The unique and contrasting color of her uniform enable the referees to identify her easily. This is important because liberos are not allowed to set or attack a ball in front of the 10 foot line. Lauren is in the position of libero because of her strong defensive skills, especially her ability to dig (pass a ball that has been spiked). She may replace any back row player but can not rotate into the front row. She must also be out of the game for one play on each substitution. High school rules allow her to serve in one of the serving positions.

A substitution is allowed during any dead ball situation regardless of who is serving next. A player may substitute into only one position, by service order, during a set (game). Example: If player #3 substitutes for player #16, player #16 can only re-enter the game for that same player or serving position. This prevents a team from substituting a strong player repeatedly into a position where they can dominate such as serving or hitting. A coach is limited to 18 substitution in any one set (game). Libero substitutions do not count.
